A lawyer can usually check for one while you are abroad, using a power of attorney.

Tell us briefly where you are now and what you know about the ban or the case behind it.

If you or a relative have just been stopped from leaving Saudi Arabia, start with urgent help in Saudi Arabia.

What does a travel ban in Saudi Arabia mean, in plain words?

A travel ban means you cannot leave Saudi Arabia while it is in place. It is also called an exit ban. It usually ends when the problem behind it is dealt with. That problem is usually one of these:

  • an enforcement file: a file at the Enforcement Court, often about an unpaid debt;
  • an open case: a court case that has not ended;
  • an investigation by the police or the Public Prosecution, the authority that investigates crimes.

This page is about leaving Saudi Arabia, not the rules for entering it.

Why does a travel ban matter if you are a foreigner?

A travel ban can stop you boarding your flight home. So check for one before you book. And if you leave before a ban is in place, the debt or case behind it stays open.

Where will you meet the term travel ban?

You will usually meet it on two official platforms. Absher is the Ministry of Interior’s online platform. Najiz is the Ministry of Justice’s platform for court cases and enforcement files. Each shows different records, so check both.

Can you check for or deal with a travel ban from outside Saudi Arabia?

Usually, yes, through a Saudi lawyer who holds your power of attorney. This is a signed document that lets a lawyer act for you. You sign it in your own country, as our page on power of attorney for Saudi Arabia, signed abroad explains.

You may not be able to check yourself from abroad. Najiz uses Nafath, the Saudi login app, which needs an ID issued in Saudi Arabia. Absher also needs a Saudi account. A lawyer can check for a ban and work on the debt or case behind it. We tell you early if any step needs you in Saudi Arabia.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if I have a travel ban in Saudi Arabia?

Start with Najiz, the Ministry of Justice’s online platform for cases and powers of attorney, if you can sign in to it. Najiz needs a Saudi digital identity, linked to an ID issued in Saudi Arabia. If you cannot sign in, a Saudi lawyer can usually check for you under a power of attorney. See how to check for a travel ban or an open case.

Is a Saudi travel ban the same as a ban on entering Saudi Arabia?

No. In this glossary, a travel ban means an order that stops a person from leaving Saudi Arabia. Whether someone may enter Saudi Arabia is a separate question, with its own official channels. If you are not sure which one applies to you, ask a licensed lawyer to review your situation before you travel.

Can an old travel ban affect me if I come back to Saudi Arabia later?

It may, so check before you plan to return for work, a visit or Umrah. Find out whether anything is still open under your name. Najiz needs a Saudi digital identity, so clients abroad usually act through a Saudi lawyer, under a power of attorney certified for use in Saudi Arabia. The lawyer can then check for you.

Can a lawyer promise to remove a travel ban?

No. Saudi professional rules don’t allow lawyers to promise results they don’t control, and we wouldn’t. A lawyer can find the cause of a ban, explain the steps that apply and take them for you. Be careful with anyone who asks for money in return for a promise. See how travel bans end.
